SCOPE is a non-profit
organization that provides support services to individuals with
developmental disAbilities and their families in Edson and Edson and
surrounding area. Services include but are not limited to residential
and respite care. Transportation subsides and individual requests for
assistance will be considered.
S.C.O.P.E
has been in operation for 30 years. It was began by a group of parents
and community members who saw the importance of keeping individuals with
a developmental disability living within their home community. On
January 21, 1974, the organization was incorporated as Edson Association
for Developmentally Handicapped (EADH). The Association was
started from funds that were raised by local auctioneers through Charity
Auctions and were distributed to Calgary and Edson. Originally the
Organization’s activities focused on children, but as the children grew
the organization shifted to providing services to adults.
In 1985 a Group Home for six
adults with developmental disabilities was opened.
In 1996 staff working in the
Group Home felt that the name EADH did not accurately reflect the
Association. Through much consideration the name Supporting Choices of
People, Edson was established.
Supporting - reflects the many ways the
organization provides service to individuals
Choices - follows the philosophy of
allowing individuals to make choices
Of
- provided a link to form the acronym
SCOPE.
People - because our client population are
seen as people first and foremost
Edson - identities where services are
provided
In 1998 S.C.O.P.E established a
second residence; a home that was donated by Weyerhaeuser to Handicapped
Housing Society.
We currently are serving 11
individuals. Nine individuals are receiving residential and day
supports.
